Appropriate Use of Medicines

Calling on World Health Assembly to Save Lives and Money!

In the build up to the World Health Assembly (WHA) which will be held on 14-23 May 2007, HAI Africa and Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network (EPN) have collaboratively developed a document calling upon the WHA delegates to support and further strengthen the Rational Use of Medicines (RUM) Resolution which will be forwarded to the sixtieth WHA for consideration. The one-page document is entitled "Saving Lives... Saving Money! Support the World Health Assembly Resolution on Rational Use of  Medicines."

The goal of RUM is to ensure therapeutically sound and cost-effective use of medicines by health workers and consumers in order to reduce morbidity and mortality, and to contain medicines expenditure. The HAI Africa / EPN document emphasizes the importance and necessity for RUM. It also outlines the benefits of strengthening RUM, such as decreased expenditure on medicines and improved treatment outcomes. While it draws attention to the strengths of the RUM resolution in its current form (http://www.who.int/gb/ebwha/pdf_files/EB120/B120_R12-en.pdf), the document also suggests some specific inputs that Member states could make to further strengthen the RUM Resolution.
