Focus on Treatment Affecting HIV Fight

Monday 22, February 2010 - Uganda’s effort to reduce new HIV/Aids infections is suffering a setback partly because more focus has been put on treatment, a senior government official has said.

Dr Kihumuro Apuuli, who heads the Uganda Aids Commission (UAC), said last week that the availability of the life-prolonging anti retroviral drugs had resulted into more money being directed towards treatment compared to prevention programmes.

 

Cervical Cancer High in Arua District

Arua, Tuesday 9 February 2010 - CANCER of the cervix ranks highest among the various cancer types causing death in Arua, the district health officer, Dr. Patrick Anguzu, has said.

Anguzu said up to 29 cervical cancer deaths were registered last year.

He was last week addressing journalists in his office on World Cancer Day. This year’s theme was “Cancer can be prevented too”.

 

Fake Drugs Impounded in Iganga

Iganga, Tuesday 9th February 2010- THE Police and officials from the National Drug Authority (NDA) in Iganga have impounded over 10 sacks of counterfeit drugs smuggled from Kenya.

 The counterfeits, packed in gunny bags and boxes, were seized from a boutique in Iganga town on Sunday.

Jennipher Aujo, the inspector of drugs in the south eastern region, yesterday told The New Vision that the team got a tip-off from a town resident.

AFRICA: Corruption Carries High Cost, World Bank Says

WASHINGTON, Mar 16, 2010 (IPS) - Poverty is on the rise in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and various forms of corruption threaten to undermine the impact of investments made to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the continent, said the World Bank in a report released Monday on Africa's development.

The report says the number of people who live on less than two dollars a day has doubled from 292 million in 1981 to nearly 555 million in 2005.
